Thanks so much for writing this. You put into words what I have been thinking for a long time. Design systems and component libraries are the hills that Design always die on. Designers wear “design systems” like a badge of honor. In most mid-size companies, design follows Product, not lead. In order to lead strategy, Design must create a culture of R&D — not the kind that sits in the ivory tower and tell stories, but the kind that gets its hands dirty in “making,” rigorous experimentation, and pushing the boundaries with creative technologists. Designers must see experiences through the lens of service blueprint, opportunity framing, business ROI. It is a move away from craft to business systems. Design should help the business to visualize and map anything. I think this can be the future of UX. It is the ripe new pasture for IA. Craft will still be there but the intentionality frameworks behind them can be much more powerful. But there are few designers and design leaders who can build this kind of culture. If you find design leaders who can do this, follow them, because they create new methods to fit the problem. They know how to build coalitions and that by itself, is a sort of information architecting in action.
